Tarangire National Park
Where Giants Roam
Tarangire National Park is one of the country’s hidden gems. Often overlooked in favor of the Serengeti or Ngorongoro, Tarangire surprises visitors with its peaceful atmosphere, beautiful scenery, and incredible density of wildlife especially during the dry season.
The park is best known for its large elephant herds, which gather around the Tarangire River, the park’s lifeline during the dry months. It’s also home to lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and more than 500 bird species, making it a favorite for birdwatchers.
Tarangire’s landscape is distinct: rolling hills dotted with ancient baobab trees, wide savannahs, and seasonal swamps that attract all kinds of animals. The park is also one of the few places in Tanzania where you can see dry-country species like the fringe-eared oryx and gerenuk.
Game drives, walking safaris, and night safaris (in nearby private areas) offer different ways to explore. With fewer crowds and plenty of wildlife, Tarangire is perfect for travelers looking for a quieter, off-the-beaten-path safari experience that still delivers on big game and wild beauty.
