Tanzania’s Top Safari Parks: Where to Go and Why
Tanzania is home to some of Africa’s most iconic wildlife parks but which ones should you visit?
From the endless plains of the Serengeti to the dramatic crater of Ngorongoro, each park offers something different. Depending on what you want to see (and how remote you’re willing to go), here’s a guide to the top safari destinations in Tanzania and why each one is worth your time.
1. Serengeti National Park: The Classic Safari
If you’ve seen photos of lions stalking the savanna or wildebeest on the move, chances are they were taken in the Serengeti. This park is the heart of Tanzania’s safari scene for good reason.
Why go:
- Home to the Great Migration
- High density of predators (especially lions and cheetahs)
- Vast, open landscapes that define “classic Africa”
Best time to visit:
- June–October for wildlife viewing and dry weather
- January–March for calving season in the southern plains
- July–September for dramatic river crossings in the north
2. Ngorongoro Crater: Big Five in a Day
Ngorongoro isn’t just a crater it’s a collapsed volcano that forms a massive natural bowl, packed with wildlife. Because animals rarely leave the crater, sightings here are often easy and close-range.
Why go:
- See the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo) in one place
- Unique landscape and ecosystem
- Excellent for first-time safari travelers
Best time to visit:
- June–October for dry conditions and good visibility
- It’s also accessible year-round, though the crater can get busy during peak months
3. Tarangire National Park: Elephants and Baobabs
Often overlooked, Tarangire is a gem especially during the dry season. Massive elephant herds gather around the Tarangire River, and the park’s signature baobab trees give it a unique character.
Why go:
- One of the best places to see elephants in Tanzania
- Fewer crowds than Serengeti or Ngorongoro
- Great birdwatching and diverse wildlife
Best time to visit:
- June–October when wildlife concentrates around water sources
4. Lake Manyara National Park: Small but Scenic
Located on the way to Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara is a great day trip or starter safari. It’s known for its tree-climbing lions and large flocks of flamingos, especially when the lake is full.
Why go:
- Great scenery with forests, lakeshore, and cliffs
- Tree-climbing lions (not guaranteed, but a highlight if you spot them)
- Good option for a short or first-day safari
Best time to visit:
- June–October for best wildlife viewing
- November–May for lush scenery and birdlife
5. Ruaha National Park: Remote and Wild
For those who want a less-touristy, off-the-beaten-path safari, Ruaha delivers. It’s the largest national park in Tanzania but sees far fewer visitors than the Serengeti. Expect raw, wild Africa.
Why go:
- Remote, uncrowded safari experience
- High predator populations, especially lions and leopards
- Great walking safaris and birding
Best time to visit:
- June–October during the dry season
6. Selous Game Reserve (Nyerere National Park): Rivers and Boat Safaris
Now officially called Nyerere National Park, this southern reserve is all about variety think boat safaris on the Rufiji River, walking safaris, and a very different landscape than the northern parks.
Why go:
- Mix of boat, walking, and game drive safaris
- Fewer tourists and a more intimate experience
- Chance to see hippos, crocodiles, wild dogs, and more
Best time to visit:
- June–October, before the rains start
Choosing the Right Parks for You
If you’re short on time or it’s your first safari, the Northern Circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara) is the easiest and most accessible. If you’ve been on safari before or want to avoid the crowds, consider the Southern Circuit (Ruaha, Nyerere) for a more remote, adventurous feel.
