Traveler Information Guide

Planning your safari to Tanzania? Here’s everything you need to know before you go from visa tips to what to pack so you can travel confidently and enjoy your experience with Bayo Wildlife Safari.


Entry Requirements

Passport

  • Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates.
  • Ensure you have at least 2 blank pages for entry and exit stamps.

Visa

  • Most travelers require a Tanzanian tourist visa, which can be:
    • Applied for online (recommended): https://visa.immigration.go.tz
    • Or obtained on arrival at the airport or land border (single-entry visa ~$50 USD; $100 USD for U.S. citizens).

Check your country’s latest visa requirements before traveling.


Health & Vaccinations

Required

  • Yellow Fever vaccination is required if arriving from or transiting through a yellow fever risk country.

Recommended

  • Hepatitis A & B
  • Typhoid
  • Tetanus
  • Malaria prevention (consult your doctor; prophylactic pills are recommended for most areas)

Always consult a travel health clinic at least 4–6 weeks before departure.


What to Pack

Here’s a quick checklist for your safari:

Clothing

  • Lightweight, breathable layers (neutral colors like khaki, olive, beige)
  • Long-sleeved shirts & trousers (for sun & mosquito protection)
  • A light fleece or jacket (mornings can be cool)
  • Comfortable walking shoes or boots
  • Hat, sunglasses & a scarf or buff for dust

Essentials

  • Valid passport, visa copy, travel insurance info
  • Sunscreen & insect repellent (DEET-based recommended)
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Headlamp or flashlight
  • Personal toiletries & medication (some brands may not be available locally)
  • Binoculars & camera (with extra batteries/memory cards)
  • Power adapter (Tanzania uses Type D/G plugs, 220–240V)

Money & Tipping

Currency

  • The local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS), but USD is widely accepted (clean, newer notes only).
  • ATMs are available in cities but limited in remote areas. Bring some cash.

Tipping (Guidelines Only)

  • Safari guide: $20–50 per person, per day
  • Camp/lodge staff: $5–10 per person, per night (placed in a shared tip box)

Connectivity

  • Most safari lodges and camps offer limited Wi-Fi in common areas.
  • Cellular coverage is available in towns and some parks. Consider buying a local SIM card (Airtel, Vodacom) if needed.

Time Zone & Climate

  • Tanzania is in the East Africa Time Zone (GMT+3), no daylight savings.
  • Safaris run year-round, with two main seasons:
    • Dry Season (June–October): Best for game viewing
    • Green Season (Nov–May): Lush scenery, baby animals, birding

Expect warm days (25–30°C / 77–86°F) and cooler mornings/evenings, especially in highland areas.


Safety & Local Etiquette

  • Tanzania is generally safe for travelers; use common sense as you would anywhere.
  • Avoid displaying valuables in public.
  • Always listen to your guide’s instructions, especially during wildlife encounters.
  • Dress modestly in towns and villages (cover shoulders and knees).
  • Greetings matter “Jambo” (hello) and “Asante” (thank you) go a long way.

Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended, covering:

  • Medical care & emergency evacuation
  • Trip cancellations or delays
  • Lost or stolen baggage

We are not liable for costs related to missed flights, medical treatment, or personal items lost during your safari.


In Case of Emergency

Your guide and our office are available throughout your safari. In case of urgent issues:


Before You Fly

  • Confirm your international flight arrival into Kilimanjaro (JRO) or Arusha (ARK) if your safari begins in northern Tanzania.
  • Allow time for visa processing and baggage claim.
  • Our representative will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your accommodation.
